mixing species

reptiaaron Jul 25, 2006 08:39 AM

I have this great tank that used to be for my bearded dragon until his departure. It is high enough and spacious enough to put either something big or a lot of in. I was thinking of taking out the sand in the bottom and putting dirt in it and making a terrarium for some geckos. Can I mix and match different species. If so what would be good mixes and what could I absolutely not put together. I am not a new reptile owner either. I have 2 breeding Leopards, 1 box turtle, 2 red eared sliders and a dart frog terrarium.

Thanks,
Aaron

personally, i think its best not to mix any species of any reptile, althgouh i know a lot of people do it. Even if you mix species that people say do really well together, make sure you watch them and make sure everyone is getting food and doing ok. good luck.

Thanks,

I was think about keeping it small in the amount of mixed species within the Rhacodactylus family (cresteds and gargoyles). I saw a real nice setup between them and a couple day geckos in it. The tank I was going to put them in is a 50 Gallon square show tank.

50 gallons isn't all that much and majority of geckos are climbers so they would prefer more space to climb than anything. If your interested in geckos another suggestion wuold be to try leopards or African Fat tails since you can have multiple of them in a enclosure that size and they come in diffrent morphs giving diversity.

I have seen that Gars and Cresteds have very different eating personalities. Although their care would be the same, you would probably find that the crested would be much more aggressive about getting food and would take more of its share.

I agree with the comment that mixing species is a bad idea, but agree that mixing different morphs of the same kind would offer a more interesting display without too much worry, just make sure everyone is generally the same size and no more than one male.

the tank is a 50 high it is like a big square not one of those shallow 50 gallon breeder tanks lots of room to move. Let me know what you think. I also have 2 leopards just trying to expand my horizons a little bit. I am really into the terrariums lately. I also am getting ready a dart frog habitat, but probably two monthes away froim that.
