Does anyone breed melanistics?

philllll Jul 25, 2006 02:23 PM

I've seen a couple pics of the melanistic thayeri in caresheets and whatnot, but it seems like nobody on here ever talkks about them. Does anyone have or breed any of these guys? A very under-appreciated phase if you ask me.

I have had a few go through my hands in the past couple of years. I have a male now that I am considering breeding to one of my "Ugly" leonis phase next year. I am also considering buying back a male I sold to a customer several years ago. It seems that they are the ugly stepsister of the thayeri world because it does seem like not many people are working with them. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that you can't "improve" on the melanistic phase thus it is difficult to cultivate a new morph that you can justify charging many more dollars for. Just look at all the colors popping up in the leonis phase and you will know what I am talking about.

True... I'm waiting for the day when someone gets a w/c albino thayeri... the melanistics would look crazy as albinos.

Mexicanamak. He has a melanistic female. Maybe one of you could work out a breeding loan?????? I know he bred his last year to a high white male. There's been lots of talk on this forum over the past couple of years about finding melanistic hatchlings. Might be worth a try.
