Uro breeding

Lisawicce Jul 25, 2006 09:34 PM

I'm new to breeding reptiles and need some info. I have two uromastyx lizards, bought them as pets, but they are soo sweet! I'm wondering if they may be getting ready to breed though, and what signs I may need to watch for. He sits on top of her all the time, and their appetites have been voracious lately. I feed about 2 dozen crickets a week, daily greens, fruits and veggies they will accept and parakeet seed. Both have good weight on them and seem happy and healthy. Just wondering what will happen if they decide to breed and what I need to do. I know they are a male female pair, but I believe one is an egyptian and I know the other is a nigerian red. Any help or information is appreciated!

I'd go to the uro forum for more specifics. I would like to suggest that laying on top of one another is no sign of breeding. If anything, it might mean a lack of prefered basking/hiding spots.
Generally, desert lizards will need a cooling period of some kind to instigate breeding. More difficult species may also require a change in daylight hours and changes in moisture levels.

While I am uncertain, I do beleive that your two locales of uromastyx will succussfully breed if you choose to work at it.

Thanks Ian, I appreciate your prompt response! They do have a couple different spots for basking, I just find them laying on one another in different areas of their habitat, either in their hide, out of the light, in the light, on the rock, everywhere. They have gone through a bit of a cool down period and their lights have been adjusted so that the warmer one is turned off so they have a minimum of 9 hours without the brighter light (they have an infared that keeps them warm enough, but not over 100 degrees). They've also only recently started eating the crickets, where as they did not have any interest in them before. These are the reasons I was asking, because I've heard that when they "brumate" (is that the correct term?) they will eat more insects...
I'm just trying to find out what to do if they are breeding, or what to do in the event I do want to breed them. I've looked online for the information, and don't seem to be finding it.
Thank you again so much for your reply and any additional info you have, I really appreciate it.

This site has a lot of "Uro" info; hopefully, it will answer most of your questions:
