new member question - frozen toads?

LesLonsdale Jul 26, 2006 10:45 AM

Hi guys,
I just found and joined this forum. I have a baby Eastern Hog. I have found several small toads small enought for it to eat, and it gobbles them down happily. My problem is that I won't be able to find enough small toads to keep him going for long.

Is there ANYWHERE you know of that sells and ships frozen toads??
I have been combing the internet, but haven't found anything yet.
Any other suggestions? I've heard that Eastern Hog's won't accept pinkies. ( However,I have read about methods that might help it accept them, and I may have to try that if no one knows of any source of toads.)

thanks for the help,
Les

Switch over to the pinkies, it will save you a lot of headaches. With patience, it is easily done, especially with a young one. I have switched WC adults to mice with little problems. I was of the opinion to stick with toads until I lost 4 easterns to an unknown virus that I believe they contracted from the toads I was feeding them (not to mention the whole parasite issue). Now I am a firm believer in mice. It is best to go to rat pups vs adult mice when they get bigger simply because of the hair factor. I believe the less hair the better for these guys.

Jenea,
Thank you for your response! OK, I will try pinkies, if I can find any. The nearest pet store to me is in the next state. OK, it's not that bad, it's only 45 min. away.(I'm right above the Fla. line).

I live in NW Florida (the Ivan hit area). Are you in AL or Georgia?

I'm in Bainbridge, about 1 hr. east of Dothan, and 45 min. North of Tallahassee - right in the S.W.corner of Ga.
How far is that from you?

I am as far West in FL as you can get--Pensacola. Dothan is about 3.5 hrs from me.

Forgot to mention that my juvi Easterns would eat tree frogs as well (except I had to hold them with forceps) Might help to get you through until you find some pinkies. If you are comitted to the pinkies, you might order online. It can be pricey, but if you buy 100 or more, the price break down per mouse is better than most pet stores.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I tried putting in a tree frog, but he stayed up on the glass sides, out of reach. Didn't think about forceps. Now that I've heard that hognose's have fangs, and mild venom, I don't think that I want to risk holding the frog with my fingers. ;o)

I hand feed all of my easterns with no problem (of course mine are not aggressive feeders at all). They would have to chew on you a while to get you since they are rear fanged. Handled these guys most of my life and have never been bitten.
