gnagflow Jul 26, 2006 07:42 PM

Is there any website online to buy feeders for geckos such as mealworms and waxworms? Also are they cheap?

There are actually quite a few sites to order from.
www.grubco.com they carry mealworms 1000 ct for 6.00 any size
they also carry waxworms, superworms, and crickets
www.timberlinefisheries.com they have mealworms, waxworms, superworms, and crickets also, they have pretty cheap pricing as well
most places put the price of shipping in with the price of the feeders
some other places are
www.carolinapetsupply.com
www.mullberryfarms.com
www.nyworms.com
www.ghann.com
www.bugorder.com
www.wormman.com
I'm pretty sure that those are the best places to go.

Reptilefood.com I must have ordered over 10 times already and they have never failed once. 10:00am delivery to your doorstep.

Another vote for reptilefood.com Quick with the order, cheaper than the others (I've done quite a bit of comparisons), very clean insects. Had one issue with one shipment and they replaced the orders!
Have to relay a problem I had with another west coast dealer. We received the order (5000 adult crickets). Half were dead. I live in Wisconsin but they were shipped when the weather was in the 60-70 range. We also found about 25% of the crickets to be 1/4" size. There was quite a number of extra 'travelers' with this batch as well, including some type of inch long black beetle, about a dozen quarter-sized spiders, and finally a few cockroaches (and not the non-climbing type!). All extras were quickly destroyed. However, needless to say, I was very hesitant to reach into the cricket containers to retieve a bunch for feeding after seeing those spiders!!!

The beetles (or the fuzzy larvae) are dermestid beetles. The larvae are actually edible if your lizards are willing to chow down the fuzzy things. Dermestids are scavengers and no matter what cricket company you ever go with, chances are you will run into them at some point or another....they like to eat dead crickets. The adult beetles can fly so it's hard to get rid of them all to keep from reproducing. The spiders eh.. haven't been able to ID them yet, but they are not recluses... again, regardless of supplier, there is a chance of running into them. They like to live in the egg crates and of course eat crickets.

Anywhere where the shipping isn't so expensive? I don't want to buy thousands of mealworms.

Buying 1,000 mealies at a time isn't overkill, even if you only have a few herps. Just keep them in the fridge.

How large of a container do you need for 1000 mealworms?

LeosAnonymous Jul 28, 2006 02:53 PM

Plastic shoebox size is plenty.

The problem is that we don't have very much space in the fridge as it is. My mom doesn't want a large box of mealworms in the fridge.
