Baby Frozen Thawed feeding attempts....

STUART Jul 27, 2006 02:50 PM

Ok just wanted to share some information. I have been breeding ball pythons for a while and have never had the problems as other breeders in feeding frozen thawed. I only kept back frozen thawed feeders to breed myself over the years. Any way, last night was my first attempt at feeding 13 hatchlings from three different clutches that I produced, all from frozen thawed feeders. I placed a thawed pink rat in every container, in the morning 12 of the 13 had eating on the very first attempt at frozen thawed. This just goes to prove my theory more that many people are breeding LIVE feeding ball pythons. To me whats the sense? Especially if they are normal? Any way just thought I would share, this is the first year Ive actually tried to keep statistics on this info and thought about BREEDING picky eaters. In the past I have bred picky females that wanted chicks or other food items and their babies are always picky feeders hence my only keeping great feeding ball pythons. I think they have great feeding babies. Just my theory.

What ambient temps are you keeping them at? The enclosures that is. Do you provide a night-time drop and are the FT heated? I'm looking for ways to get my hatchlings off live.

We have attempted f/t rat fuzzies as well and had luck with hatchlings taking them as their first meal. Last year we had 5 of 6 hatchling take to f/t. This year so far we have had 1/8 in the first clutch with the first attempt. And these are not our best F/T feeders as far as sire/dame. We'll see next week how well the hatchlings from those snakes do.

when im tryin ta get my hognose babies to eat f/t, i have good success heating the meal to whatever temperature i would expect that prey item to be if it were live (somewhat warm) and then using tongs to jig it like crazy like im fishing for snakes, i guess this is pretty close to live ha, the majority of the babies require less and less of this conditioning through the following feedings untill most of them will just hit it. i may look like a fool doing it but it works for me
