I could not help myself! I had to take a second quick trip to Texas in search of alterna. I spent the majority of time in the Davis Mountains. Again, like last month, rainfall is way behind normal. It did rain in the Davis Mountains during my stay, but not very much. However, I did see more snakes in the eight days this month than I did the entire trip in June. Unfortunately, I did not have all of my camera equipment and took a few images of some of the animals. Enclosed with this post is an image of a heavily spotted alterna I found on the road. This animal is 14 inches in length and is totally speckled!
The other snakes seen include:
3 Baird’s Ratsnakes
1 Emory’s Ratsnake
3 Western Coachwhip Snakes
1 Central Texas Whipsnake
4 Checkered Garter Snakes
2 Night Snakes
1 Sonoran Gopher Snakes
1 Tantilla cucullata
4 Trans Pecos Copperheads
3 Mohave Green Rattlesnakes
5 Black-tailed Rattlesnakes
8 Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes
I hope the region sees a ton of rainfall this summer and fall; it definitely needs it.
