Tokay Catching?

leopardtokay Aug 03, 2003 09:11 AM

How do you guys catch your Tokay in the enclosure without too much restraint. With my other geckos I just keep putting my hand in the cage near them until the realize its not going to hurt them and eventually they get curious enough to come over to it. The tokay I have just runs and hides if he sees me even walking towards the cage. I know I shouldnt grab the tail of course, and not to pull him too hard off of the wall because it might damage his toe pads. Any advice for catching him in his cage?

Strange that yours runs, usually they attack you and bite your finger. When they latch on you just take them out and they let go....thats how I did it at least. In any case, you can use plastic tupperware and just move it along side the glass untill he walks into it. It will take a long time for him to get used to you if you dont actually touch him.

I use a wash cloth to drop down and over the Tokay. then u can place your hand around it without it seeing your hand, i keep it over his head till out of the tank. After getting it unstuck i work it on my hand and remove the cloth. this has worked to be a lot less strssful catching them than using a glove and chasing them with your hand.

Agreed, dont use gloves it stresses them out. If youre brave enough I would just let it latch on. After a few bites it tends to realize its useless and stops. The cloth method is great too.

Yea i dont use gloves at all unless their over 8 inches, i dont know about yours but i think my whole hand would fit inside my adule tokays mouths, their huge! i use gloves and my towel method on them. after their caught i remove the glove if their calm.

well i've never managed to catch my tokay in the tank, only out of it! i wait until she hides in/on a log and then take the log out with her on it.

i've learnt that covering the eyes helps, eg, slowly move one hand towards its head while the other hand is coming up behind her. she's most likely to concentrate on the hand coming at her then she is with the one behind.

as with him running and hiding when you approach the tank.... eye contact seems to be the key with my tokay. if shes out and i go up and make eye contact, she'll either run and hide or wiat till i've gone, then run and hide. but if i look all around the tank and basically look 'through' her and ignore her, she thinks i haven't seen her. therefore doesn't run away.

have fun!
