High white/Low white pieds

boabarn Jul 28, 2006 12:30 PM

I thought the variation in the amount of white that these clutch mates show was interesting. Some breeders of Amazon Basin Emeralds used to speculate that the amount of white on offspring was random rather than influenced by the parents. This proved to be incorrect as high white adults consistently produced high white offspring. However the amount of white in Pieds does seem to be a random occurance. This particular clutch from a Pied male bred to a het/pied female produced high, low and medium white. The moral of the story seems to be that low white are still valuable as breeders.

Here is the Picture. Sure hits home the idea that there is no genetic correlation on the amount of white in the genetics of Pieds...
Thanks PJ For the picture

...I came up with a theory about the het. Piebald "markers" actually influencing the amount of white seen on homozygous piebalds.

I'm starting to think that the genes responsible for the marker trait may also influence other traits. Somewhat similar to the way that the Yellow Belly gene(s) seem to "exaggerate" any trait they are combined with. Perhaps, the Pied Marker gene and the Yellow Belly genes are related somehow?

Here is a link to the full paper I wrote up. Have a look and please feel free to let me know what you think:
Piebald Marker Theory

P.S. I know the rest of the site is out of date...I've been incredibly busy the past six months or so...sorry.
