med and surgery of torts and turts book!

unchikun Jul 28, 2006 12:39 PM

as anyone who has looked into this tome can tell you, it is prohibitively expensive to a lot of people -- i work in a library of a college, though, so i was able to borrow a copy from a local university using inter-library loan (i'd suggest anyone interested in at least reading this book or looking through it to check their options with their local library!).

i can't express enough how impressed i am by it. i've only had my first tort for going on three years, and i'm always learning new things, but this book is a godsend for anyone who (like myself) is curious about chelonian surgery, anatomy, etc. (yes, i know that anatomical pictures are available online, but they are nowhere near the quality or ocmprehensive value).

a word to the sensitive, though -- this is a medical text, and as such, it contains many graphic images of cadavers and photographs of case study animals who have been exposed to or afflicted with all manner of disease and injury, much stemming from abuse and/or poor husbandry. heartbreaking stuff that reminds me why i couldn't've been a vet...

still, a terrific book for anyone to check out!

I have a feeling you are talking about the same book that i recently read. I took it from the library at my vetschool. Out of all the books out there, I found this one to be the best, most informative, and most descriptive. I would say that it is a little over the head of the typical reader due to all of its medical terminology and graphic necropsy images. But if you at all curious about the different diseases, parasites, surgical options etc... this is a good book to have/borrow. It is called "Surgery and medine on turtles and tortoises. I forget the author, when I get home i will post it.
