Bump on the eye...

LizardLadyAma Aug 03, 2003 10:08 AM

Hi Guys,

My male Panther has a strange bump on his eye "turret". It looks like a cyst, it doesn't seem to be bothering him. Does anybody have an idea what it is, or what I should do about it?

You can barely see it in this picture... he isn't really the best subject... It's towards his nose in the eye socket...

Thanks,
Kelly

I need to ask you a few questions:
What are the temps in his cage?
Do you give you chameleon calcium, and Vit.D three times a week and proper lighting like UVB?
Do you have another chameleon in with it?
Do you see any insects moving around the eye?
If you do use calcium, what kind is it?

What are the temps in his cage? He has a few different basking spots under his light. I just temped them and they range from 86-98. The ambient temp right now is around 80. He also has a large ficus to climb on, so he has cooler areas.

Do you give you chameleon calcium, and Vit.D three times a week: Yes His crickets are dusted with supplement 4x a week.

Proper lighting like UVB?: He has a merc vapor bulb.

Do you have another chameleon in with it? No!

Do you see any insects moving around the eye? I don't see any. Do you mean mites? I looked as close as I could (he isn't the nicest guy on the planet) I didn't see anything.

If you do use calcium, what kind is it? We use Repcal w/D3 and a vitamin supplement. We mix them together when we dust the crix.

Kelly-

It could be edema in the eye, or it could be from a cricket bite or it could be from the chameleon poking his eye on something and it swelling, however I would think the whole eye would swell if he poked it, and it could also be a tumor. The pic is not the best, but make sure you are not over dosing his calcium/vitamin and if it doesn't do away in a few days or it gets biger have it looked at by a herp vet. Hope this helps!

I would start dusting crickets only three times a week. Since, you answered all the questions right, I guess there is only one other thing I can think of it is called a periorbital abscess. this is usually the result of another Chameleons claw penetrating the conjuntiva surrounding the eye or a bite to the head. These small abscesses can cause the eye to close and need to be treated as with all other abscesses in terms of local excision and antibiotic flushing.
