Uro holding mouth open

tnj318 Aug 03, 2003 10:24 AM

My new juvenile uro some times holds his mouth open. I just wondered what this meant. His temps look good and the only other thing I could think of was that his nose was clogged with sand, but that wasn't the case either. I've only seen him do this a couple of times but I just wanted to know if it was normal or it meant something.

I know they will do that sometimes if they are overheated. Are your temps good for an adult Uro? Young ones need a slightly lower basking temp. I don't know what other reasons he might do that.

It is totally normal. It is called gaping (sp) they do this to regulate their body temp. It is like a dog panting. if he only does this occasionally then dont change any temps. but if he has is mouth open almost all the time then change the temps. They usually do this when they bask. Basically what i am trying to tell you is your uro is fine.
