This is just so WRONG!

We found out today that the county fair is giving away iguanas as prizes, like goldfish! I have been putting info sheets together tonight and had already have posted pics of MBD a long time ago. Of course we have the big boy here to show people what to expect. Between people in here and the animal shelter I suppose we will turn into an Ig rescue. We have filed complaints with every one who would listen but nobody cares. These aren't cute and furry so no sympathy. Had to vent, I just cannot believe this!

I am hesitant to suggest this because I don't like being an alarmist (even tho I know that it's an exaggeration) but find out who hired the carnival that is using iguanas as prizes. Go to them and point out that they are putting their community at risk of salmonellosis. Tell them that baby iguanas can carry and transmit salmonella if proper hygiene isn't used. It worked here.

I've called the hospital tonight and told them the facts so they would consider samonilla. Will talk to the health dept tomorrow. If I have my way they will not be giving away lizards next year. I am all for people getting into the reptile hobby and if they want an Ig fine as long as they are prepared to take care of the animal. This is the wrong way to do it.

What I like to do is to mention that salmonella is preventable, but the parents of most of today's children are too young to remember why little baby turtles were banned and I get most of my complaints from parents whose child won the iguana and they went to the fair with another parent or an older child.

I also had a complaint from a grandmother whose 7 year old grandchild, the oldest of 4 children, won an iguana and it was now lost in the house.

Which County Fair. I can help. THis is illegal in many states and cities.

The best advice is to write a written letter to the fair board, fire station, etc. You may not be able to stop it this year, but you can stop it in the future.

Call the newspaper and TV stations also.
