Five-lined skink freaks

ginebig Jul 28, 2006 09:41 PM

OK, to my knowledge a five-lined skink tops out at about 8-9 inches in length. I saw one today that was at LEAST 12 inches long and possibly a touch longer. Sorry, no pics yet . I'm goin' back out to try and catch this thing tomorrow, or at least get pics. I'll be back.

Sounds like a broad head skink.. basically identical to 5 lines only they are bigger than 5-lines.

I've got that from a couple others but I'm in Michigan and we don't have broadheads. Unfortunately it's disappeared on me. I'm on a mission though, I'll get him eventually

Oh Mich thats like Alaska in the winter time . I would have never thought skinks could eat enough in summer there to make through the long winter .
Its to bad 5 lined skink lose the color and the blue tail as I must say looks real nice

ginebig Aug 12, 2006 04:23 PM

Hi Lia, I tried to post to this earlier, but it seems to have disappeared.

Michigan doesn't get near as cold in winter as Alaska .
Certainly it freezes over for the winter, but not to a depth of several feet as it does there. Reptiles here hibernate out of necessity, but more survive it than not. Surely enough to repopulate come spring time . I had a trio of them a couple years ago that didn't even winter over inside the house and did well till I left for a week and no one fed the poor things. The wife won't go near reptiles of any kind and my boys were apparently to young to trust with the job.

It IS to bad they loose their color as they age, Although I've seen what looked to be adults in the wild that kept their blue tails. I sometimes wonder if it has to do with the UV rays from the sun.

P.S. I haven't seen that big'un since I first posted about it

Lia Aug 23, 2006 07:25 PM

Lol I know to me its as cold but I know it isnt my friend used to live there told me about feet of snow all winter long and weeks at 1 digit numbers brrrrrrr .

Herpin_man Sep 23, 2006 05:21 PM

If it really was 12 inches, it wasn't a 5 line.
Do Broad Heads occur where you are?

ginebig Sep 23, 2006 08:15 PM

I'm in northern lower Michigan. As far as I know we only have two species of lizards here. The five-lined skink and a small localized population of six-lined race runners. Also, after givin' it some serious thought he was more like nine or ten inches. I was hyped enough my brain went into overload, you know, like fishermen . Was still large for a five-lined. Here is a shot of one I DID catch. It's about eight inches.
