Flourecscent vs. sunglow

nehpets1 Jul 28, 2006 10:09 PM

So, around these parts in southern indiana, you can ask two people what your snake is, and one will say flourescent orange and the other, sunglow... What's the difference, if any?

And is one more valuable than the other.

My understanding is that "Sunglow" is a color morph of Motley (someone please correct me if that's wrong).

On the other hand "Fluorescent" refers to the fact that some corns actually fluoresce when exposed to ultraviolet light.

I believe on of the Love's cornsnake booklets has pics of fluorescent cornsnakes.

Here you go:

Sunglow = An amel snake with minimally expressed white in the pattern (many amel motlies are sunglows, and that is why motley is so closely associated with the term, but they are not synonymous).

Flourescent orange = An amel snake that has exceptionally bright ground and blotch coloration, usually separated by very wide white borders...the very best reverse okeetees are called flourescent oranges.

All in all, a sunglow and a flourescent orange are identical from a genetic perspective (unless motley is thrown in there as per above), and the only differences are the result of line breeding.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the explanation!

I stand (or in this case sit) corrected.

Some cornsnakes do fluoresce under UV, but this apparently has nothing to do with the "fluorescent" color morph.

Cheers,

John D.
