A question about UV

jasonw Jul 29, 2006 02:24 PM

Just a quick question. I probably already know the answer but figured I would ask anyway. I use 1 reptisun 5.0 18" night on the enclosure for UV. My question is Scooter spends several hours a day out side in an outdoor enclosure soaking up the sun. Since he dose this is it even requiered to have the UV light? The only time he dose not go out is if we are out of town wich is rarly, other than that I bring him out there every morning when I wake up and keep him there untill I goto work at about 1pm. Thanks for the help. On average he spends about 7 hours a day in the natrual sun light.

1 hour of noon day sun would be more than 12 hours under fluorescents. So you do not need the UVB lights to be on. But you should keep the lights available so if there is any reason that you can not get him out for an extended periods you have them as backups. The amount of time you have him out should be sufficient IMO.

Thanks for replying. I figured I would keep the lights for the Iguana in the winter time where clearly there would not be enough sun for him and he would nmot be out in the cold anyway. Thanks agan for the reply

Just make sure he still has a warm basking area for when he is inside. Use regular lights if it too dim without the fluorescents.
