Animal planet needs to fact check...

garweft Jul 29, 2006 11:20 PM

I just saw a special called The Beauty of Snakes, and they showed a corn snake that had just laid eggs. The funny thing was the narrator said that the snake had just mated a week ago and is now laying eggs. I guess that corn can magically become gravid after its pre-laying shed.

I wish mine would deposit their eggs that fast after mating.

maybe they confussed the laying a week after their shed with laying a week after mating?
Who knows. I did not see it. Wished I would have. I love shows about reptiles

I watched the show as well, i thought that there was some really nice photography and my son loved it!! But, i have to agree that there were several fact errors. In the same segment that you mentioned they also stated that "once the corn snake laid it's eggs they will begin to hatch in 3 months"

I guess it would have been too easy to jump on the internet and consult someone who actually breeds reptiles..

overall it was pretty good show.
Yes they did get some facts wrong but at least the WHOLE show didn't dwell on venomouse species or giant constrictors.
That's all you see, stories on the giant constrictors or stories sensationalizing the venomouse species.
Someone seriously needs to do a show on non-venomous native species. The beauty and diversity of North American non-venomous species could fill hours and hours of tape.
The closest I have seen was when Bruce Means was trying to catch some Apalachicola Kings.
I have seen him chasing cobras, wrangling crocks and building traps for kings.
Pretty busy man.

I think its been about 2-3 years or so but Jeff Corwin had a show where he got dropped off in an undisclosed location (supposedly anyway) in the US. His goal was to try and figure out where he was based on the snakes he found. Of course they found some venomous species but they also found and talked about a few other species that you never see. I thought it was a pretty good show as you could play along at home. Definitely an interesting format that I wish they would try again.

I wish Animal Planet had more Reptile adventures rather than animal cops (boringggg!) and funniest animals(stupid but mildly entertaining at times)

It could have been copulating a week before, but that would not have been in time to fertilize the eggs.

If that was the only copulation, then the eggs are infertile.

It could have been a second clutch that was already fertilized from the spring, but the female was still allowinf mating behavior.

Just to nitpick....
