What about the Speckled Kingsnake???

theshadow Jul 30, 2006 12:05 AM

Hi all,
I don't post much here, and this is my first visit to this particular forum. I do read the classifieds quite a bit though. And in all my visits there, I have never seen any ads for Speckled Kingsnakes for sale??? Why not? I see every other kind of kingsnake, but no speckles. Here in the Ozarks they are very common, but in this state we are not allowed to breed or otherwise comercialize any local herps. But surely some ambitious breeder out there has taken it upon themselves to collect a few, and begin a captive breeding project,...right? Not that I'm looking. I have one, which I am allowed. He is for educational purposes. But I find them every year. I'd really like to know if there is anyone out there working with this species. They are gorgious snakes, and I think it's a shame they've been overlooked by breeders. So is there anybody out there? I can send pics, and provide hints on where to find them if anyone is interested in working with a species that nobody else seems to have, or want, or know about. you can e-mail me at the-shadow@rock.com , or I'll just come back and check here. Anyway, I was just curious. Thanks,
Tom.

I don't know that I've seen them for sale in the classifieds, but I've definitely seem them available.

I've not been to Berkeley (CA) for awhile, but East Bay Vivarium almost always had some in their stock, and they were rather inexpensive as well. Additionally, I've seen some at various breeder websites - in normal, albino, and lavender.

Not to beat a dead horse, but does anyone know if the lavender gene was borrowed from Cal Kings?

There have been 2 different ads about the white sided speckled kingsnakes posted in the last month.

Isis Reptiles will probably post some in the coming months.

There are plenty working with them.

Though not near the numbers you'll find compared to some of the other kings, you usually can find holbrooki for sale on a somewhat consistant basis in the classifieds. Isis reptiles has nice normal holbrooki, and Peter Jolles (ECC) has some for sale now.

Thanks for all your replies! I'm pleased to know that this species has not been overlooked! I guess I haven't been paying close enough attention. If I can remember how, I'll post a pic of the one that I keep. I'm normally not a big fan of wild caughts but I'm fairly certain that I caught this same snake last year. So when I found him again, I figured I'd try to feed him. He took right off the tongs, first try, without hesitation. So I kept him. Now lets see if I can do this picture thing,....nope can't remember. Oh well, it looks pretty much like that one. Thanks guys. Later.

open bracket [

followed by closed bracked ]

then the url to where you have the image.

Then the same as above - except forward slash img /img

This board isn't UBB - but UBB syntax seems to work for most things.

Tom, I'm currently working with 4 seperate locales with very distinct appearances. I have MS, LA, and Kansas locales, all of which were collected by myself or a close friend. I just hatched a clutch of Kansas eggs, but unfortunately none are available.

They are on the market, but sometimes you have to look for them. They won't be overlooked for long if I can help it.

Kansas clutch.....

Maybe it is just the lighting or the contrast, but I like the snake in the third pic the best (the one just under the Lousiana text).

That's a gorgeous specimen.
