and last year, we divided forces and she walked up an alpine alterna while I cruised/spotted a ft. davis alterna.

all that aside, if she's not seriously into alterna (or at least seriously into hunting snakes) you might ought to have a plan (lots of movies for the dvd player, pay more for a really nice hotel like the Gage in Marathon, etc).

a. She has much better eyesight than you.
b. She is patient enough to scan cuts ALL NIGHT LONG without complaints.
c. She is lucky and always wins jackpots when you go to Vegas.
d. When she walks around snakes just seem to make their way in front of her...
e. As a druid child she figured out she was a "ParselTongue" and could speak to snakes. (Sorry Harry Potter Ref).

Best Wishes,

Steven
ps. Very few wives can take care of themselves like Marla Hibbitts can. I would NEVER let my wife walk around cuts in the middle of the desert by herself. Yes this is a compliment to you Marla.

i would think ones wife would want to go on such a trip. this way they have you trapped in a car for 8 hours a night and can talk to you about all sorts of things. maybe the question should be: "do i really want my wife on this trip?" just kidding (not) my wife loves going out there. i say go for it. she may become additcted like the rest of us and beg to go on several trips in the future

If her nails are done and she works in the a/c she might do better at the finer motel as suggested. But if she loves to camp, go for it!

Personally, I think it is a great idea to take them herping BEFORE you commit to them. You can learn a lot more about someone by spending a few nights roadcruising with them than you can in a movie theater or bar.
Take her along. She will either love it or hate it, no in between.

You did good. So did Coach. You have to admit that Moe is made of strong stuff. Plus she has good eyes and can see the small stuff.

Myself I chose the model so... It takes 2 hours for her to get ready but hey... My kid will be here soon and she will have to change her ways... Oh yes...

My wife lives the whole year for our trip to west Texas. She was greatly saddened when obligations took us to the Southeast this June instead if west. But, she got her first *eastern* diamondback this year!

I've hunted West Texas since the late 60's and I can't tell you how many times I've looked into the other guy's car and into the dark, miserable eyes of the woman in the passenger's seat at 4:00 in the morning. "Can we go back NOW?!" "You want to go out tonight AGAIN?!" "For how long?!"

Nothing against the wives but put yourself in their shoes. Sand on the beach or sand in the desert? If you, guy or gal, are not dyed-in-the-wool into it, living like vampires for a week at a time, sitting on your tail in the car in the dark for 9 hours at a strech, often seeing nothing, how would you like it.

I suppose everyone brings their wife or girl friend once. Those of us with wives who love it are the luckiest guys in the world. The others, remember, you promised them Disney World next year......

Cheers,

Terry Vandeventer

Some guy and his wife were hunting Juno. Had been for a couple of nights. Every time other hunters would pass them, all they heard was a steady stream of griping from the passenger seat. Finally, in an attempt to give her something to do, the guy hands her a spotlight, tells her to shine the road cut. She turns on the light, illuminates a gray-banded kingsnake and shouts at the guy "Is this what you're looking for? Can we go home now!?"

Don't know if its true or not, but that's how it was told to me.

Terry you picked a good year to take off.Very dry this year. Not much of any thing moving.I have been lucky to have found five alterna plus a celaenops last nite.I have been following what little rain we have had.Hope to see you and Ginger next year.

She has a pretty predictible schedule, She will shine cuts or watch the roads till about 11:30 or 12:00. Then she pulls out her (best investment ever) DVD player and watches a movie. As soon as the movie is over she grabs the pillow and goes to sleep. She comes along when ever she wants, knows what she is getting herself into and never complains. That first time though can be scary, never know how they will respond. So get that DVD player!!!

I would never take a woman to West Texas with me. Even if I hated her and wanted a way out. It would most likely be the most boring moment of her entire life.

My wife proved herself before we got married. She's game for any type of snake hunting, anywhere, anytime! She's in charge of the tunes and the snacks, handles the Q-Beem , drives while I burn and shoots the video when we score. I always try to make the trips interesting for her and we do more than just hunt snakes. Our trips are more like adventures. We have friends from all over the country that we've met while herping and look foreward to seeing them when we travel. We even got engaged in West Texas......at the Gage in Marathon. Now everytime we're down we stay in Marathon for a couple days as tradition and of course hunt Black Gap.

Reckon I'm real lucky. Loraine can ride the roads 'til I'm falling asleep at the wheel, then shake me awake at first light to go looking for Indian artifacts. With the right lady, life is good!! Just wish we could ride Texas roads instead of Florida roads.

alterna63 Aug 01, 2006 09:15 PM

ARREDONDO!!!! Aren't you supposed to be on the Morelia forum??? :)

Wayne

Arredondo Aug 02, 2006 02:24 PM

Hey Wayne! Yeah, but I just keep dreaming of the desert...

Arredondo Aug 02, 2006 08:36 PM

Forgot to say I'm usually all over the Uro forum but, what a slow drag that is!
Next spring, maybe summer, maybe fall, we plan to do a long-awaited desert trip. Hopefully, we can hook up with you or someone "in the know" for some real time on the border. We're not so much interested in taking anything home, though a suboc or gray band would be super, mostly just want the experience of southwestern roading for herps.
Here, in swampland, night rides are routine... Corn snakes, Grey Rats, Mud snakes, Pigmys, Cottonmouths, Natrix, blah, blah...
Do you have roads out there that don't constantly produce some asshole in your rearview mirror when you're trying to collect??
That's where we'd like to begin our trip!!
Dan & Loraine.

alterna63 Aug 02, 2006 10:55 PM

I can hook you up. Give me a shout sometime. info. can be found on www.snakeworld.com. I always have that same problem while in Florida. There's always some as*hole behind me whenever and wherever I turn! Here in Texas, some roads the only people you do see are snakehunters!!

It does depend on her, of course.

I guess I’ve been very lucky.
My wife has been my outdoors partner for many years as we’ve raised a family and now enjoy taking our grand children with us when we can.
Though not a herper, but more of a birder, she still shares my excitement of going to a new location to spot some new species.

While I’m looking for “Goins” Kingsnakes in Florida, she’s right there with me looking for Prothonotary Warblers, and fishing with me for bass or reds.

While I’m looking for Mex Milks in South Texas, she’s right there with watching Golden-fronted Woodpeckers nest in the telephone poles, and fishing with me for bass.

While I’m looking for Senticolis in Portal AZ, she’s right there with me looking for a Bridled Titmouse.

While I’m looking for Emory’s in Colorado, she’s right there with me looking for a Pine Siskin, and fishing with me for trout.

Vermont, Wisconsin, Missouri, Montana, ETC ETC ETC - you get the idea – BUT

The novelty of the Davis Mountains has somewhat worn off for her. Suffering from hieni-itis from a long drive to get there, she usually settles down in the Sunday House Motor Inn with A/C, cable, a good book, and a laptop with DVDs while I go through the self abuse of walking cuts, getting bugs in the eyes, getting torn by spiny plants, driving till cross-eyed tired, repairing cholla flat tires, etc.

We truly are a sick lot.
Maybe there’s a Herper’s Anonymous organization.
