i have used mineral oil in the past for my nicaraguan red tail boa, and it has worked beautifully. i used a separate aquarium, and put about 3/4 of an inch of oil in the bottom, and put him in there with it (he's only about a foot long so this was enough to cover him without being so deep that he couldn't breathe). the oil suffocated the mites and he was better after his next shed.

My wildlife center takes in many abandoned burms each year (in additio to our permanent resident burms used for display and education)...we have tried EVERY "proven" method but after trying each one with only limited success, we stumbled across Pro Product's Provent-A-Mite. It is by far and away the most effective and easiest product to use to eradicate mites. Soaking in water/oil/etc. may get rid of those mites still on the snake's body, however, mites leave their host and lay their eggs off of the host. What good will soaking do? Eventually, the problem will come back. Get a can of provent a mite and you won't have to worry about mites any more.
