JCP OR BOA???

bpkid Jul 31, 2006 12:07 PM

Hi, I'm new here.I have 1.1 ball pythons and I have done an extensive amount of research on both Boa Constrictor Imperator and Jungle Carpet Pythons. I've been fascinated by both for 2 years and I do plan on having both down the road. My question is, which should I get first? Which is the more rewarding snake to you guys? Size of an enclosure is not a problem. Food prices really isn't a problem for me either. I've kept corn snakes and kingsnakes, and a few lizards.

I would say the Boa for a few reasons. First, this is the Boa forum and I don't want to get beat up.

Second, you have good experience but it is with realatively nice animals. I would stick with the boa since it tends to have a much better disposition than a JCP. Once you get used to a larger snake then I would look into getting the JCP. Also JCPs sometimes have a little bit more problems with feeding than boas which rarely refuse a meal.

JCPs are great snakes but they are not the best choice for a "pet" snake. That is they don't care for handling, they are stressed easier, and they are more sensitive to keeper error. However they are great display type animals with a very unique look.

Well, I noticed you posted the same question on the morelia forum....In all honesty...I keep both, and have a few of both, While Jungles can be very Beautiful, and very Awsome snakes to keep...I think your should go with a Boa for your next snake. Just from my own experience, I started just like you, and what progressed after Balls was a Boa, and after a boa a Jungle, with many others in between. I LOVE both, and my Morelia Friends are going to kill me but I would highly suggest a Boa for your next snake. But then again I have never seen a boa look like this..

I currently have a couple of 06 jungles, that can be kinda tricky to get them to the point of having a good feeding response, while ALL of our baby boas have INSANE feeding responses and feed on anything anywhere anytime. I would really recomend both, but my next snake was a Boa so I would have to suggest that. Good luck and have fun choosing..

I just went through the exact same debate. I was set on getting a JCP because they look so cool. But after handling a few and then looking at some Boas for the first time in more then a few years, I came home with a new Boa from Clay English at the TX Reptiles show. My situation was close to yours too. I've got a few lizards and 2.2 Balls and I wanted another type of snake for my son to raise with me, so in the end the temperment of the Boa won out. I will still get a JCP someday but I'm enjoying my new Boa for now.
