Looking for Red Worm Supplier????

EasternLvrs10 Jul 31, 2006 06:38 PM

Our regular supplier of red worms seems to only have available to him skinny small specimens to feed our box turtles.

Can anyone recomend a place to buy nice fat juicy red worms??

Thanks
Melinda

I have never seen a fat, juicy red worm. Are you sure that you don't mean a nightcrawler or some other earth "type" worm?

Te red wigglers here look "anorexic". In past years they have always been bigger except as of late. I don't want night crawlers from Canada as for some reason they are not partial to those. Originally from outside Boston and the earthworms "aka" nightcrawlers from back home were far superior.

Just trying to see if anyone has suggestions, even about other protein feed. We feed worms, superworms, reptomin, may start trying mazuri tortoise chow...

Any other suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks
Melinda

Timberline Fisheries sells something that is between redworm and nightcrawler sizes --- european driftworms. They are more along the lines of normal looking earthworms. plenty of juicy size for a box turtle but not overwhelming like nightcrawlers can be. The only drawback for some people is that you have to buy them in 6-packs (each pack is a 24 count). They are not expensive about $10 for the 6-pack. Shipping varies depending on location. I find ordering very easy.. just call, give them the info of what you want and they usually ship out same day (if the order is placed before 2pm).

A good bait shop may have the drift worm listed as Angle Worm or Leaf Worm. The scientific name is Lumbricus rubellus. They grow to be about 4 inches max. You may find other sizes of this worm listed with different names in the bait shop so make sure you open the containers to check size and health.
