Substrate for Glossies

reako45 Jul 31, 2006 07:36 PM

I know a few of the guys on here kept or experienced Glossies in captivity. I've got a Mojave Glossy and I'm keeping him on loose sandy soil. Just curious as to what those who've kept this snake either used themselves or saw used successfully. Thanx.

I have had mine for 4 or 5 years and have used Aspen for most of that time. I am using shredded Aspen but have used shavings as well. My curiosity with this snake is that mine eats only occasionally but appears obese. I believe this species to have a low metabolism compared to other desert species. I am curious about what others have to say on this.

Wow! tahnk you so much for your response and info. Is your Arizona elegans ssp. a candida (Mojave)? I will keep you posted on the eating patterns of mine. I've got him eating scented (w/ a SoCal local sceloporous lizard) fuzzies (2) per feeding. 1st feeding he was rather shy. 2nd time he ate in front of me w/ no hesitation. At what temps is he kept? Do you brumate him or does he go off feeding on his own in the winter? Thanx, again.

Mine is a Desert Glossy, Arizona elegans eburnata. I keep it in an Iris tub similar to Rubbermade. The room is kept at 80-85 daytime and dropped to around 75 at night. I do not have any heat tape or other heat source except ambient room temp. It is a shy snake and I keep it on a lower shelf. It feeds on a small f/t adult mouse maybe once a month or so. I offer it food more frequently but it skips many meals. I have never offered it lizards or lizard scented mice. The animal looks healthy and is quite thick. The animal has been doing well for the several years I have had it. If anything it is obese. I hope to build heated racks this winter but with a new baby coming we will see.

Congatulations on the soon to be new addition to your family. Thank you so much for the info. Like I said in a previous post, there is very little info about these guys being kept in captivity. I'm curious as to whether or not anyone has ever tried to breed them in captivity. I don't know the entire range for A.e. eburnata (a very pretty ssp btw) but I know it ranges from California into AZ and probably Nevada. Where was your collected from?
