My BTS

bast May 20, 2003 05:45 AM

I thought I'd share these photos with you...particularly Edward as promised. These are shots of my BTS. A couple were taken in their new outdoor enclosure. I had two old, concrete cold frames once used for vegetables. I made PVC pipe frames and covered those with hardware cloth. There are several burrows under the rocks and I added a large, shallow water pan.

These were given to me. Can anyone help nail down the subspecies/species ID?

Thank you,

Brian

PS: I'll post a photo of the whole enclosure when I can chop it down to the photo gallery data limit.

Those are Irian jaya BTS (Tiliqua scincoides ssp.) I guess if they were housed together for a while the odds of havign 2 males are remote sicne they havent beat the crap out of each other yet, but I would definitely watch for that if the plan is to keep em together. Look fine to me tho

They were kept together for several years before they were given to me. They have no scars and even have all their toes.

Thanks for the info,

Brian

What characteristics do you look for to distinguish those 2 sub species? I was also given a pair that very much resemble these, and i just assumed that they were I-Js. I dont have a digital camera, but I'd really like to correctly ID my own now. Tks

Take a close look at the species section on my web-site.

Biggest tip off is the front legs, as in they are completely unmottled. Tanimbars and IJ's share a lot of common characterstics, as do several BT (sub)species.

The front legs, combined with the neck coloration, and scale appearance made me say Tanimbar.
