Need breeding loan advice.

midnightherps Aug 01, 2006 03:09 AM

Hi Everyone.
Im not new to the forums. I just dont post very often but Id like advice from anyone that has a reasonable suggestion as well as experiance in breeding loans.

My friend (yes friend...not stranger) fronted me some money to invest in a couple of projects. He doesnt know much at all about the snake husbandry but I certainly do. Therefore I will be doing all the work breeding, feeding, selling, etc. My friend is not in this for money persay, hes doing this because he realy wants to get into the hobby for the love of the animal and at the same time it helps me obtain morphs that I otherwise am unable to currently fund.

He paid for one pair of adult het pieds and one breedable male yellow belly. I own all the females that we'll breed the yellow belly to.

For those of you with experiance, how would you set the terms. We are both very compramising but it would be nice to know what type of options we should look forward to and/or what percentage we are both entitled to.

Whats a good/fair way to divy up the babies? who keeps the het pieds in the long run? who keeps the yellow belly?

Thanks

Well, I would guess it would depend on what you want.
He owns the yellowbelly, so when the yellowbelly eggs hatch, one would assume you would want at least one male out of the clutches.
Now since you are raising all the snakes and doing all the hard stuff, you could also ask for a female yellowbelly (Aka you get first pick of the clutches) and then divide the rest accordingly.

The het pieds may be trickier, since he owns both...BUT, you are still doing the grunt work...
so...you could ask him for one pied,
or he could keep all the visuals and you take the rest (The hets and possible hets)

You'd really have to sit down and talk it out with your friend.
The above statements are just examples/ideas.

Here is what I would do. Both of you sound like this is just the next step in extending your hobby, not a full time job. You can do a few things in this situation.

Share all the animals. Since he is fronting the money and you are fronting your skills and labor (that is a very fair split if you ask me). If you are investing in morphs to start a business, why don't you split all of the money for a few years, then "buy out" the animals from each other when the time comes. You seem like good enough friends (just don't let money or snakes come between your friendship, and believe me i've seen it happen before).

You could also flip a coin for who gets first dibs this clutch and go snake for snake after the first one is picked (like in a draft order). Then next clutch, the other person gets first dibs.

Just make sure business doesn't ruin a friendship. Make this project fun! It will pay off in more ways then one.
