Can't get rid of mites

kk123 Aug 01, 2006 07:30 AM

My adult bp has mites. I've treated her twice w/ Zoo-med Mite-off. The last time she was treated was Sunday, and yesterday she still had mites on her. She is on paper towels right now instead of her usual aspen. Should I be using another product? Is there something else I could be doing. I think this is also the reason she refused feeding last week.

bleach everthing! except the snake! 10 parts water 1 part bleach. there are more pricey cleaners available, but whatever. if you have multiple tanks(cages), clean all of them, mites spread easily. clean water bowls hide boxes, and get rid of old substate. start over from scratch. i prefer to hose my tanks off outside, with a garden hose to make sure all the bleach is gone. wipe them fairly dry, hose down again, then wipe completely dry. while you're doing your hosing and cleaning, give your snake a bath(mites hate water, they will jump off your snake). my first ball i ever got had mites. i used this method, and have'nt had mites since. hope this helps, nate.

Another thing to try is get some mineral oil and coat your snake. Not where it is dripping off, but a light coat. What this does is sufficates the mites b/c they are coated with the oil. Be careful of the mouth, eyes and pits. Also, look around your snakes eyes, mites are known for living and breeding around the eyes. A trip to the vet and a shot of ivermectin will also do the trick. Our jungle/diamond cross had them when we bought him. Yes, mites have been known to cause a snake not to eat. They can also cause a bad shed. Good luck.
