Important ? about Thermal Gradients

lefty82 Aug 01, 2006 08:28 AM

Okay, I have my second tank ready to go and my new girl comes in today. Turns out getting a proper temperature gradient isn't as easy as I thought. The substrate on the "cold" end is in the 70's, and the hot end is consistently around 95. How many layers of paper towels do I need to diffuse this down to the high 80's. Is 95 a dangerous temperature? I am using a UHT.

One easy way is to use a dimmer switch or rheostat. You might be able to get there using a few pieces of ceramic tile also. It looks nice and is easy to clean.

I just use about 2 layers. If you use a heat lamp or heating pad, the area right under, or above, it should be around 90 degree; this should keep the rest of tank around 80 degree. Nightime temperature can drop down to the low 70. I think in your case if you use only 2 layers of paper towel that might do the trick.
