No More Difficult Sheds!

PhunkyJess2k3 Aug 03, 2003 01:21 PM

My fiance and I have a large ball python in our growing collection. This snake has always had a hard time when it comes to shedding, it would take a really long time, be very messy in small pieces, he had trouble with the eyecaps and a lot of times, we had to help him along in the bath tub. After at least a year of bad sheds, his eyes began to crack, they were dry and appeared more gray in color. This was from not having enough moisture or humidity in his tank for him. So, one day at a local pet shop, we found an in tank humidifier. The other day, the snake completed his first shed since the humidifier, it was a clean shed in very few bigger pieces and his eyes look amazing! The eyes have cleared up beautifully, no dryness or cracking and he actually appears to have better vision now. This will make feeding him a lot easier too. I just wanted to share, this humidifier did wonders for this snake. It wasn't very expensive either, it's quiet and runs off an aquarium air pump.

Glad to hear that you finally got the tank environment correct for your baby. Humidity is very important. Please don't take this the wrong way: My heart aches a bit because I am thinking of the year that he spent in low humidity.

I am not ripping you in anyway. I am glad things are right now and no permenant damage was done.

Continue to do good for your baby. Don't hesitate to ask questions of the experts (I am not an expert). Many of them have years of experience and are very willing to help!

I for one have been able to keep my humidity 60%-80% without a humidity pump. However, I am sure it is a necessary tool for some set-ups, esp. if you have overhead lump, which I don't. I only use under tank heating, precisely because lamps dry up the air too much.

by the way, did you see my new babies? three of them feeding in a group. Cute, no?

cheers.
