Looking for grape vine roots&cork bark

railrider1920 Aug 01, 2006 11:44 AM

I was wondering if anyone knows of someplace online to get some grape vine root or cork bark fairly cheap. In my area, the sandblasted grape vine root is about $35 for a small piece and the cork bark is about $7 a pound (about one foot of it)Anyone know of a place to get it cheaper?
Thanks,
Rob

Literally. I live in an area of Ohio that is mostly vineyards. A lot of land has old grapevines growing. We call them spider vines. They grow to teh top of trees and web the tree tops together. At times when you cut a tree down, it hangs in mid air, and you have to chain it to a truck to pull it down.

OK, to much info. Where do you live? Look for country areas that might have grape vineyards. I use to cut a lot of it and take it to the shop, after I saw a name brand 6" pice selling for $6.95.

It's really a weed to us.

I know exactly what you mean!I grew up in W.V. and wild grape vines are rampant up there. We used to swing on them like Tarzan.Have you looked at the price of moss lately? That's something else I used to see alot of. jeff

Wet moss, or like Spanish moss down south?

I know nothing on either really. I started a botany class once way back when, but never to much interest in that stuff. Now I wish I learned when my brain was still in a semi absorption mode.

I pulled a huge bag of Spanish moss off trees in Ga when I went there a few years back. I think total sales was $50 lol

It really is funny what people will buy if it is not in there area.

My old property, further east, had 2' fern trees of some sort deep in the woods where very light light got to.

They would be cool for frogs or something like that.

I'm making a concerted effort to get off my arse no matter how much my back hurts. So maybe I'll start getting into the woods around here. Long story, but I've pretty much stayed in my house except for working for 3 years. Was/am in a serious rut!

I have spinish moss in the trees around my area. One problem with that stuff is that chiggers sometimes live in it. Little red bugs that get under your skin and make you itch.

You have the rare SPINICH moss? lol jk

Yea maybe, moss would be cheap to ship.

How can you kill those safely and not kill the moss?

I'd be interested in for reselling it, not for my use.

On the topic of shipping, when I did ebay I bought 3000 books, and found a magical thing called media mail. It is a cheap but slow way to ship books mags etc. People have been known to ship a small paperback and maybe something else. Be reasonable, but if speed is not important I have shipped items that might cost me $10 for $2. I would just say I added something with the book, if I got caught. I never did. Yet.

I'm referring to the green moss that grows on rotten logs and stuff.I know of places where this looks like carpet. jeff

Hmmm let me ponder that one. We don;t do a lot of amphibs, and I would think it would be more for them. Also not many people that setup nicer vivariums.

But many thanks, and I will keep it in mind.

I tried to ship the grapevines once. I put them in a 7' 4" tube.
The package met all the post office limits. as far as length and volume of package. But they would not take it?

I know you can soak them in warm water for a long time and bend them, but it was not worth it.

But the are not a rare item. At least under 2" in diameter, big stuff is as it has to grow so long and only the aea near teh roots.

There is a big show in Chicago this fall. I was hoping to go to it as it is in driving distance and I just wanted to meet some of the people from here.

Maybe??????? If I take my van, I can bring grapevines for those that want it. No sales, just figured I'd take some with me. But I do not see it on the event page?
