Bummer.

StephF Aug 01, 2006 12:01 PM

Of the three eggs layed by the biggest of the girls here, one wasn't fertile (it was tiny, so no surprise there), but the other two hatchlings died within 24 hrs. of pipping.
Then, of the 5 eggs layed by another, 4 have hatched successfully, but the fifth had died, and I realized why: it was a twin, apparently sharing a yolk with a sisbling that had stopped developing. I'll post photos soon.
Not a great start this year.

that sucks Steph, the twin thing would eat at me for a while, just sucks that in reality theres not alot that could have been done, maybe the ones that died in the first clutch had internal issues??
hope the others do well.

Thanks, guys.
The twins were sharing a yolk in an egg that was not even the largest of the clutch. It was sad because the larger of the twins lived for about a day after pipping, but the smaller one was under-developed and showed no signs of life at all. I didn't see any obvious defects or deformities: they both looked quite perfect, albeit small, and had pipped a little later than clutchmates, so they weren't premature in that sense. I wonder how often twins hatch successfully...it seems as though the odds would certainly be against survival of even one.
The hatchlings from the other clutch also appeared to be well formed and hadn't pipped early, so I don't know what happeened to them.
There will be more hatchlings to come, no doubt (in fact another is pipping as I write this), but it's rough when the very first ones of the season don't make it.

That is so sad. I am sorry!

I opened up my incubator the other day
to find two clutches hatching.

On one group of five, four were completely
out and one egg was just sitting there.

I picked it up and there was a hole on the
underside, near the front of the egg.

I could see the yolk sac and what seemed to
be a huge leg. I poked the leg several
times and there was no movement. So I decided
to gently open the egg, starting at the hole.

I found a dead baby with a perfect face, but with
a severely deformed shell. One front leg was unusually
large and the one on the other side seemed underdeveloped
so I don't know what happened. I've got it in the fridge
and I'll try to take a photo of it.

So sorry to hear about it Steph, sorry too Lisa that you found one dead.
That's such a shame.

i was gone much of the summer, so i don't know where any of the luteolas laid eggs in the yard. one of the nesting females was one which hatched in my yard some time ago, i was especially disappointed to miss a F2 clutch.
