Help me identify these snakes plz (pics)

Corndog45 Aug 01, 2006 01:21 PM

Late last night I found the large snake pictured (its about 10 inches long), and then I put it in an old aquarium. This morning when I got up, there was 10 hatchlings-each being about 5 inches long. Does this mean theyre poisonous? To me they look like brown snakes, or ring snakes. A ring is around every neck, but ring snakes lay their eggs. Im from Oklahoma and dont know of a native poisonous snake that looks like these, or I could be wrong. The pictures arnt very good, so Ill provie further iformation if necessary. Any information would help, thanks for your time.

That is a Brown Snake or Decay's snake. Named after a Dentist from N.Y. They are harmless. Looks like you got the bonus pregnant brown snake! They eat earthworms and snails, but are tough to keep as pets.

Oh Yea. They have "live births." Ovoviviparus.

James Ellsworth DeKay was a naturalist, not a dentist.

DeKay's snakes (Bown snakes). There may be more or less of a ring around the neck depending on where they come from.

Although all of he North American venomous snakes except the coral snake give live birth, there are also MANY non-venomous that do also. DeKays, garters, water snakes, some ring-necks, etc...

Very cool. I saw this thread a day or so ago. This morning I was out on my driveway, looked down, and found this. Just thought I'd share!
