Sealant for plywood?

viborero Aug 01, 2006 01:46 PM

Hey all. I recently picked up a 6x2.5x1.5 homemade plywood cage. It has swing down doors with plexiglass in them. It is not the best looking cage, but it can be fixed up. What can I use to seal it? It could use a nice non-toxic paint job, as well. I will be moving my Red-Tail in there, so I need it to hold moisture. Also, how do I go about sealing it? Is there a process to follow?

Sorry, but I know NOTHING about DIY projects.

Thanks for your time.

Any idea at all what it's sealed with now? Getting various topcoats and paints to stick to each other is not always easy.

No, I don't know. It has a very thin watery varnish look to it.

That's a tough situation as certain paints/sealants simply don't like to stick to each other.

One choice is to put a plastic material down. You could cut up fiberglass reinforced panel (FRP) or Sintra or some of the self adhesive vinyl film used in the graphics industry. Or even some scrap vinyl flooring. In fact I would do this for the floor of the cage regardless as this is where urates, feces and water spills will do their most damage.

If you really want to paint something over the walls I'd use a seal coat to act as a barrier. The most readily available is Zinsser's Seal Coat which is de-waxed shellac. You can buy it in spray cans or in small cans to brush on. It will stick to just about anything and just about anything will stick to it. So even if the current coating and your desired coating are incompatible the seal coat will work inbetween them.

Before I continute, what sort of look do you want for the cage interior? A solid color, a clear coat, or what?

A clear coat on the inside would be good. I was thinking of painting the outside of the cage a solid color.

For a clear coat on the interior you have a few choices. One is to try and track down the original builder of the cage and find out what was originally used and then use more of it. The one exception would be if an oil-based polyurethane was the original sealer. Way to much hassle and offgassing, IMO.

Another choice is to use the Zinsser Seal Coat like I recommended and then use a water-based polyurethane over that. The caveat here is that you would really need to use a plastic flooring of some sort as I don't consider WB poly to be durable enough for the floor of a Boa cage. But this is a good idea regardless.

Your last choice is the most expensive but probably also the most durable. You could use Envirotex Lite or one of the other solvent-free bar top epoxies and pour on a thick but very durable finish. I like these epoxies but they are expensive and fussy. Some people who have tried them have reported problems with incomplete curing. It's never happened to me but I do feel like I should warn people of this possibility.

...for all the info. One last question: Do I put the polyurethane on the floor below the plastic flooring, or do I just put it in as is?

Yes. Absolutely put poly down before applying the floor.
