soft eggs

carolinareptile Aug 01, 2006 05:04 PM

my box turtles layed eggs. I know the eggs are supposed to be hard shelled, but mine are kinda soft. Its not really like lizard eggs, but its not life chicken eggs either, when you touch them (with gloves of course) they feed sorta soft, yet still firm. my adults have lots of calcium, so i dont think its that.

do you think they'll still hatch?

It depends on what type of box turtle you have. With your username, I'm assuming that you're from the Carolinas. If so, you probably have Eastern box turtles. Eastern box turtle eggs are supposed to be leathery and pliable. They'll actually firm up more as they incubate. Sometimes, you can actually make depressions in them as if they're not quite full. Don't fret.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! yes, they are eastern.

wow, thats a relief. they should be fine, i've incubated lots of lizard eggs, these are my first turtle eggs. now that i know they are supposed to be a little leathery, i feel better.
