Light Bulb Question

Travis123 Aug 03, 2003 01:55 PM

Ok, the heat wasn't going up high enough in my tank, so I used a household incandescent light bulb, and it is bringing the temperature up quite a bit. Is this ok?

Yes, it is alright to use the household incandescant bulb...as long as you have a table lamp dimmer to lower the intensity if it needs be. The househole incandescent gives of more color spectrum of light than the one sold for reptiles and are in much better quality. If you want a photo period for your snake then this is perfect. The ones sold for reptiles sometimes only give off certain color which the reptiles cannot see, and that is bad for the diurnal species. From what I read from "The Ball Python Manual" by Phillipe de Vosjolis, ball pythons will do well even if the cage fairly dim during the day, providing the cage is kept nice and toasty. But other would disagree and argue that they do need photo period.

You should becareful when getting a dimmer...make sure it handle the wattage of your lightbulb...never exceed the maximum wattage that it can handle.
