Shedding question

garweft Aug 02, 2006 12:18 PM

Ok I'm new to hoggies but not to snakes. I've kept Rats, Kings, Corns, Balls, Boas, etc...

I got 3 '06 hogs on June 16, and they still have not shed. They eat great, eating from 1-3 pinks every 5 days (female takes 3 every 5 days/ males take 1-2)

I would guess they shed at least once shortly after being born like hogs do, but why haven't they shed since? Do hogs shed less often than other young snakes? It would make sense since they are smaller snakes as adults so could grow slower. I am not worried, I just think it is kinda strange.

Call me crazy, but feeding 3 times in 5 days? Is that too much, or am I not feeding my hogs enough? I usually feed 1 to 2 pinks a week (depending on the size of the food item).

3 pinks every 5 days is a lot. I tend to feed young snakes as much as they will eat as long as they don't start to show signs of obesity. I would never keep a schedule like this up for long. It just helps to get good growth early in the snakes life. I go to a weekly schedule after the first year still offering all they will eat. Then after the second year I go to 1 good size food item every week.

Also let me say that I do not trick my snakes into taking more than they eat by themselves.

My eastern has been shedding every 3-4 months since I got her as a hatchling 2 years ago.

Assuming it's a Western, that's normal. Western hogs shed alot less than any of the snakes you mentioned. It freaked me out too when I first got into them.

Like you said all the other snakes I've kept shed every month or so. They are very healthy so I was not worried just thought is was kinda weird and wanted to make sure it was normal.

I would be expecting them to shed soon. (at that age about every 2-3 months)Keep your eye out for the blue. They usually shed within a week after that. I usually soak mine or make sure I mist thier cage right after the blue goes back to clear (when they are about to shed)This makes it easier and the sheds always come out whole when I do this. Make sure you check them everyday for the blue. If you miss it, as you know it could be bad if they do not shed off the old skin.
My experience may not hold true for all.

Ok I guess I should have been more patient. My female just went into a shed cycle today.
