Paper towel or newspaper. Not pretty, but it's cheap, easy to clean....

...I use unprinted newsprint. The secret is out: you can buy stacks of 2'x3' unprinted newsprint from Moving & Storage companies. It doesn't hold humidity that well but I compensate by spraying and wetting down the paper. Scott J. Michaels DVM

Does anyone use bed a beast? I have been using newspaper, but it's just boring for displays.

I use newspapers for my baby ball. It's easy to change and I get them for free from my good friend and a neighbor. You can use the astroturf, but you should wash after soiled on. You can use paper towel, also. If you want a more natural and realistic look you can go with bark ship that you can by from the Low's or homedepot. If you use it, instead of put the food on the floor of the cage you can use like a small tupper wear or a carboard box to put the mouse in in the cage...this way your snake won't swallow the bark accidentally.

Plus, I think wood chips or barks provide traction for the snake...making it easier for it to move around. I just added some climbing branches for my snake, so he can get some exercise.

Or you can put the food on a newspaper or layers of paper towels.

I use newspaper as well. It's very absorbant and you don't have to worry about the snake accidently digesting it during feeding time. However it's not that preety.
Astroturf is good, but it does come aparrt after a couple of washes.

I personally don't like using a newspaper or paper towel substrate. Maybe it's just me being silly, but I think if a snake is in this little tank for its whole life, the least it can have is something soft underneath him that would be similar to what they would encounter in the wild. I use a bark substrate for both my large ball and the baby. It holds the humidity in very well, it's super easy to clean and looks great on display. Ball pythons require a lot of moisture and humidity, newspaper doesn't do a very good job at holding that in.
