Atheris hispida picture, 2 colour phases

africansnakes Aug 02, 2006 05:14 PM

Atheris hispida in olive-brown and green phase.
Before u blast this pic with criticism.. I got full bites of hispida before and it caused me personally no more than an itching sensation. So no sweat. I just love these "hairy" little buggers.

The reason we don’t like free handling pictures is not because we are worried about YOUR health or safety by any means, but we are worried about the negative connotations they carry to new or younger viewers never mind the fact that you are giving lobbyists ammo to use against the responsible keepers out there, who don’t put themselves at risk to become news headlines

it should also be pointed out that you have no clue as to how much, if any, venom was injected.
As Forrest Gump would say.............(you know the quote)

I complete concur with Patrick. You foolishness reflects badly on the whole hobby. Did you every hear of Anaphylaxis brought on by repeated exposures to snake venom?

Photo would be much more interesting and beautiful if there wasn't that hairy arm.. just snake/s on the twig or hook or something
But indeed nice snakes.

Best wishes Sami

to Tim and africansnakes: thanks for the compliments.

i truly believe that a huge part of keeping venomous snakes is common sense (which IMO is not being used in this photo). im not saying you dont need to learn certain skills such as hooking, tubing, tailing, etc., but a lot of venomous snake bites are caused by a lack of common sense or, dare i say it, stupidity. seeing the pictures of the bites of these snakes was enough to cause me to give these animals the respect they deserve and avoid the pointy end at all costs lol. i dont plan on keeping a lot of hots but the ones i do keep will be kept in the safest conditions possible.

I agree it is not a smart thing to free-handle venomous snakes.

Especially not if one is not fully aware of what one is doing. Had I had any better picture showing both phases id have posted that one. But I dont..

I however stated clearly that I PERONALLY was bitten by hispida before and I PERSONALLY never felt more than a itching sensation on site of bite. I PERSONALLY made the experience that A. hispida have a very mild venom (which also makes sense as they eat SLUGS) and therefore due to my PERSONAL experience dont feel a big risk when I PERSONALLY handle my A. hispida in a while as I PERSONALLY also am not susceptible to allergies. If you are familiar with anaphalactic shocks then you also know that chances of me eating peanuts tomorrow and getting a lethal anaphilactic reaction from those is equally high as getting an anaphalactic shock from the next hispida bite. So lets keep actual facts in mind.

In short I PERSONALLY do not consider my action careless as I have the knowledge to know the risk I PERSONALLY take.

But to anyone else I agree. Freehandling ANY venomous snake in general, also A. hispida or any other venomous snake, is a potentially LETHAL and CARELESS thing to do.

i did a little research on these little fellas and according to the site was reading these snakes are highly venomous and in my humble opinion you were lucky not to have been envenomated when you were bitten do not use that experience to judge the potency of there venom

what do you feed them i read they are hard to keep alive and like to eat slugs????
