feeding young cornsnake...help!?!?

killr_silhouette Aug 02, 2006 06:56 PM

i have a baby cornsnake...which i have owned for appx. 4 months...
im not exactly sure of his age...but im assuming he is at least 5 months old...

i have been feeding him one f/t pinkie twice a week since i got him...(every wednesday & sunday) and he has been doing well and growing...

but after i feed him...he always seems like he is still hungry...he swallows the pinky in a matter of a minute or so...and then actively searches around the (seperate from his cage) cage i feed him in...

am i feeding him enough?...or should i maybe feed him more often or more pinkies at each serving?...

he is going to the bathroom normally...and he used to have the buldge where the mouse was before...but now that he is growing a little, it doesnt show up much...however, i think he is still too small to eat fuzzies...

please help!!

thanks so much...here's a pic of him...

What is the approximate length of the snake? If your snake is 5 months old, it would have hatched in March, which is unlikely, as snakes usually hatch in the summer. My guess is that the snake is closer to a year old than it is to 5 months of age.

Most yearlings are beyond pinkie-eating size. The rule-of-thumb I use when feeding snakes is to give them a food item that is about the same thickness as the thickest part of the snake.

There are different sizes of pinkies (and fuzzies) available, or you can give your snake two of the food items you're currently using.

he is 21inches long...

he is still fairly small...i got him in April...

I would probably move him up to fuzzies. They aren't much bigger then pinks and I believe they are more nutritious. Pinks don't have a lot of substance to them. But like the other poster mentioned, don't get a food item that is much thicker then the snake. A little thicker won't hurt.

i was thinking about moving him...but i really think the fuzzies are too big...where i live, i cant get different sizes...i think he would be okay to eat the peach fuzzies...

but i cant get those around here...and mice-direct's shipping prices are insane...the cheapest one was $33...which is more than the mice themselves would cost...

and i only have 2 snakes...so buying a lot of mice isnt practical for me...

You can either feed two pinks at a time, or you can get fuzzies and cut them in half length-wise and feed both halves. Like the previous poster said, fuzzies are more nutritious.

My girl always acts like she's still hungry no matter how big of a mouse I give her.

I think it's residual feeding response. After about 10 minutes of active searching she retires to digest.

Aiken feeder foods has a flat 10 dollar shipping fee as I recall.

You would be surprised what they can eat.
I doubt seriously your snake would have any trouble with
a fuzzie.
Try it.

okay...i think i might try feeding him a fuzzie...

thanks so much for all the suggestions...

i will look into Aiken...i would much rather order online than buy from a store where pinkies cost $1.19 each...
