Silkworms

I have been buying 50 large silkworms for my year old bearded dragon. My question to you silkworm feeders is this. How do you prevent them from spinning cacoons? I recently cleaned out their tub three days ago and today I noticed that nine of them had spun cacoons. That is four days worth of food!!!!! Is there anything I can do?

actually thats a good thing because all you have to do is wait till their moths and mate them. when they turn moths they cant fly all they do is mate and lay eggs and that is it all. all you have to do is find mulberry leaves or buy food and you never have to buy silkworms again their the easiest worm to take care of i myself am trying this but i only had a couple of sillk worm so i only have three cacoons and one that is spinning his web right now lol but that is a blees from the sky

well if you dont want them to grow take their food away and theyll stop hopefully if not then you cant really stop them unlesss you feed them to your dragons asp

bye

Unfortunately there really isn't anything you can do to stop the silkworms from spinning coccoons. Once they get to a certain age and size, they will coccoon. However, like orlanda mentioned, you can easily breed your own silkworms. Their eggs can be stores in the fridge for up to a year and hatch about 10 after taken out of the fridge at room temperatures (70-75F is best). Silkworm chow or mulberry leaves are the only foods you can feed silkworms.

Not feeding silkworms won't stop them from coccooning but most likely they wont' survive to morph into moths. Providing a little less food will slow them down somewhat but eventually they will still coccoon.

The only way you can use up all the silkworms before they go into coccoons, is to buy them at a smaller size and feed more to your dragon (i find getting mediums is best, by the time they are nearly used up, they are just hitting their max size).

How many medium silkworms do you feed your dragon? I will feed mine two to three large a day. One in the morning in an attempt for him to eat some veggies and two in the afternoon for his meal.
