Keeping ball pythons side by side

Ritas Aug 03, 2006 03:10 AM

Hi
I have a male ball python thats a yr old . He is great tempermeant wise and great eater . I am thinking of getting a female and keeping her in tank next to him.

Any problems with this ? I ask because have read some snakes change tempermeant wise, etc if they smell a female in area . So wanted to see if anyone has had that experience. The male lives in 30 gallon long tank and the new F if I do get her will be in 20 long next to him.

Thanks

I don't know about the temperament issue; I only have one male at the moment (getting my new one next week) and he has always been a little brat when it comes to temperament.. I do have him housed in the same room as two of my three females; only one fem. in the room is a mature female though, the other is an '06.
I would definately quarantine the newbie for a month or so; after a vet check to rule out parasites, etc, you can then observe him visually and beware of any signs of disease.
From what I have read, it is caging males and females together that can put a damper on the male's desire to breed; or at least, keeping them seperated and then introducing the male at breeding time (November) will help "kick in" the breeding response.

I should have asked if it would make him nippy or put him "off" to food if he picked up a females scent ?

But I gather from your post no problem in that regard . I dont intend to breed them as I wouldnt breed my pure albino male with my new piebald female .

Lol kidding I wish . The male is "average" the f I am getting next week is "average" . They are just pets .
Going to house them next to each other in seperate tanks .

thanks

I keep a male and a female together in the same tank, and the male is still as sweet and good natured as he was when I first got him and he was housed by himself. He also eats like a pig. Oddly enough, my female's appetite has improved since I started housing them together.
Point being, you probably won't have a problem.
