my cham escaped!!!!!

dumbkid Aug 03, 2003 03:04 PM

my chameleon escaped! i had him on my fig tree outside (potted) and my sister was outside too. i told my sis to watch him while i went in the pool for a little bit. i was swimmin around, and i kept asking my sister if he was still there, she always replied that he was. she was on the phone with her boyfriend (shes only 13, and i dont approve of this) so when i asked one time, i realized that she wasnt even looking at the tree when she said he was still there. so i scolded her, and then i went to retrieve him. he was gone. i started panicing, and i looked in my yard, my house, and all my plants. then i thought of the worst, in my palm tree. he was. so i got a ladder, and the net from my pool, and i got him. hes safe.

I don't recall who, but not too long ago someone told a story of a bird (hawk maybe?) that swooped down and snatched his cham - right in front of him!! Can you imagine the pain and guilt that poor keeper feels?? So my advice would be if you have him outside make sure YOU are the one in charge b/c he is YOUR responsibilty - not your 13 y.o. sister who has a boyfriend - believe me, I was her many, many, many years ago and nothing else in her world matters but that boy LOL!

Be grateful that nothing more happened and see this as a wake up call..and to anyone else who reads this. When I have Bart outside I am SOOOOOO protective of him. Being only 1" long he is just a snack for many of our backyard birds and if I am to even look away for a momment he goes back in his tank or gets covered by a box. I'll take no chances with his itty bitty life

Take CARE

Hi-

Just keep an eye out for the birds they LOVE chameleons! I have had a hawk come in from the canyon and perch on the top of my shade cloth over the outdoor cages while I was under neigh it. I scared the [bleep] out of it and it never came back. I have also put one of my panthers on a ficus tree right outside my door, turned my back, he climbed off the ficus tree and ran across the grass and in to the bottom of our avocado tree. So they are fast when they want to be, be careful! Hope this helps!

Yes you are very lucky. About a month and a half ago I built an outdoor sunning cage for my two year old male veiled. It wasn't constructed that well, I just overlapped the screen on one side and anchored it will velcro to make a door. Needless to say, he got out one day while I was at class, I was taking summer classes in college. I was only gone for a few hours. We looked around for about two hours and couldn'd find him. I felt so guilty cause I knew it was my fault for not making the cage as good as I should have. It felt so weird not have have him around so I purchased another one about a month ago and his name is Rocky. Sorry it's so long but I just thought I would finally share my experience. I felt so bad about it I didin't wanna share it.

I like to think that no one here would judge you and rather empathize with you. I'm sure every cham keeper has a sad story to tell. I killed Kaiya by improperly administering her meds - one week ago today. I am very sad, feel very guilty, but as someone on this fourm pointed out - learn from it, and I have...as did you, dumbkid and hopefully others who have made mistakes. We also need to learn from each other's errors so sharing them helps you to work thru it and hopefully teaches the rest of us.

Are you in a warm climate? He may survive and show back up some day...you never know!

If a love sick 13 year old girl has to make a choice between watching your chameleon and talking to her boyfriend guess which one she is gonna choose!

But if you tell her that she will probably just get resentful and insist on having one even more.
