Hello and Lizard moving discussion

purduecg Aug 03, 2006 08:45 AM

hello folks! Sorry I haven't been around much lately, it is amazing how packing up ones entire existence and moving to a new state can take over life entirely! (Particularly for those of us that could be considered packrats. ) The move is finally upon me though, with the obligatory last minute changes.

I was going to get to my new apartment the same day I moved out of my current one. Late, but in enough time that I could drag out the lizard tank and get it set up and put Mosca into it. Minimizing the amoung of time he has to spend in the "Le Cardboard box Motel". Unfortunately, due to road construction, timing, and exhaustion, I think I am going to have to do it over two days. So he would have to stay in his box overnight. I seem to remember us having this discussion a couple of times before but I couldn't find the threads (what a fairly useless search engine!). Any thoughts on whether he will be ok overnight in a box? Concerns? Obviously I will not leave him in the car, and being careful the hotel room doesn't get too cold for him at night. Otherwise though? Best to use a cardboard box instead of one with "windows? I would think he would feel safer in a "cave like" environment... I am moving accross the Midwest, so "too cold" isn't really in the vocabulary at the moment.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Elizabeth

ps - these occasions are why you should always put your big cages on casters... My parents were thrilled once they realized all we had to do was push the bohemouth up the ramp.

Liz, basically pack up Mosca as if you were going to ship him/her. Mosca will be fine overnight as long as your temps don't go to extremes. With the weather the way it is you wouldn't even need to worry about hand warmers unless at night you stay in a freezing cold room or something. I remember you from on here and I assume Mosca is still really healthy so you shouldn't worry.

wow, moving already! cave like environment would be best and just make sure that sunlight isn't coming into the windows roasting him in the backseat or anything. if i am alone my lizards sit in the front seat all belted in in their boxes with the seat pushed back so the airbag couldn't hurt them

Thanks you guys! Yes, Mosca is still healthy, and plump. I keep meaning to post some new pictures of him. Hopefully once things settle back down I will get that done. He isn't quite as big as I expected him to be by this time in his life (he will turn two this month!) but he is "happy" so thats all that matters. Once I have some "spare" time I am thinking about adding tunnels to his environment, and maybe even adding some external places (think gerbil cages with tunnels between cages). Though that depends on how I manage to fit everything into the new place.

Thank you again for your input. I was pretty sure I had the right idea, but these days I even like to verify my NAME if it is important its correct. I wonder which box has my brain in it... :-D

I hope he makes the trip fine...I'm sure he will. I am actually moving this weekend as well (only 20 miles-- not a major move), and I think I am going to see if I can do it without Bruce ever even knowing it. I'm going to wait until he's out for the night and then pack him up and move him while he's asleep. If all goes as planned, he'll wake up the next morning and never even know he's moved. Wish me (and Bruce) luck!

Good Luck!

My experience is that they ALWAYS know. Or maybe my lizards just get cranky more easily. Or maybe *I* get cranky when I move and cast that emotion onto them. lol. Either way, I hope your move goes smoothly, and as stress free as moves can go!

I really love your Bruce pictures by the way! I wish there was a way for you to do some portraits of Mosca!

Uros are tougher than you are. And tougher than you think THEY are!! Not to worry. Give them the proper surroundings & they'll survive the move just fine.

Thanks for the compliments on Bruce's pictures...I'll pass that message along to him for you! I'm sure you can get some great Mosca pics on your own. All it takes is some patience-- About 80% on your part and 20% on the uros part!

Well, Bruce made the move as I had hoped. Plucked the little guy out of bed at about 12:30 in the morning and we moved. He only gave one half hearted attempt to open his eyes during the entire process and then fell back asleep. Woke up the next morning and he seems fine....I think I fooled him!
