What are the "croc laws" in your state?

rugbyman2000 Aug 03, 2006 03:06 PM

Hi guys,

I am just wondering what some of the state laws are regarding crocodilian species as pets in various states. Just to give you a small sampling from the NorthEast, our state of PA has ZERO state laws regarding non-native reptile species. In other words, most hots and crocs are completely unregulated by state law so anybody can have whatever they so desire (barring local city laws, of course). Here is what I know about our surrounding states.

OH - Crocs/Hots Legal

NJ - Hots/Crocs Not Legal

NY - Hots/Crocs Not Legal

MD - Hots/Crocs Not Legal

DE - Almost ALL Exotics Not Legal

Does anyone have any feedback from any other areas, or corrections about the 6 states I mentioned?

Here's a great picture of a young gator I have that regularly "snuggles" with its Painted Turtle roommate.

The state does not regulate anything other than endangered species. Cities and counties are responsible for their own ordinances.

In Illinois they prohibit "potentially dangerous animals"...I've talked to a number of people here, and few can agree whether the croc family is legal!

Our famous Hamburg, PA reptile show is always packed with people and vendors. Since our state has ZERO laws regulating non-native herps, you can buy pretty much anything your heart desires in Hamburg. Whether that is good or bad is another discussion for another day. But Hamburg does have a great deal of selection and it's a show I try to attend at least once or twice a year. It's worth a long drive every now and then.

Indiana. hots with a permit no breeding. Gators yes until they reach 5 ft. then a permit is needed. Crocs not sure

manhattagator Aug 04, 2006 07:32 PM

you just need a permit. i know a few people that have the proper paperwork and keep them right out in the open for all to see. and its totally legal. mine on the other hand....well.....mind your own business!

Thanks for the update on NY herp regs . . . when I say "illegal" what I mean is "requires a permit". I had read that the state of NY had passed some herp laws recently that banned hots and crocs and large constrictors without proper permitting. Is that still the case?

im pretty sure you can have red tail boas but i know anacondas and retics are illegal now. EVERYTHING in NYC is illegal except paying $3000 a month rent for a one bedroom. that youre still allowed to do. its ridiculous here.

More less, however, the regulations on crocs haven't really changed. You've always needed an Endangered Species Permit to own them (legally) and the new herp regs have no bearing on Endangered Species Permits (i.e., timber rattlesnakes, massasaugas, etc.)
