FR, MikeT, other Canadian breeders...

i get a number of Ackie and monitor requests from Canadian herpers, asking if we can ship Ackies (and other monitors) up to Canada. Ackies of course can't go, and we don't do any animal exports anyway, but do you guys have any suggestions or breeder referral info i can pass along to these inquiries?

i would like to see Canadian monitor keepers have some kind of access to quality animals, but i just don't know who to send them to : )

thanks for any insight.

Robyn,

Try contacting Brandon at Canadian Coldblood. He is breeding a number of Odatria species, and currently sells most of his offspring to Europe and Japan, due to a limited demand for his monitors in Canada. I'm sure if you were able to direct some customers to him, he'd be more than happy to sell more domestically.

I think keepers in Canada, have better access to breeding stock then we do. They can import from other CITIES countries, and they can import Australian monitors. Its only us that have problems.

I also heard there were some very good breeders in Canada. Maybe more then in the States. Maybe not produce more monitors, but do very well with what they have. At least thats what I heard.

I will be interested in what is posted. Cheers

Well, I am not Frank and not Mike T, but if anyone from Canada would like to get Ackies from Europe, I can organise it!

Hi Robyn,
Good to hear from you. There's actually quite a few people here that have ackies, though it doesn't seem like too many have been successful with consistant breeding. That said, I certainly could forward a few phone numbers of those that might have some available. Myself, I no longer work with the dwarf monitors. Brandon at Canadian Cold Blooded is hands down the top Canadian producer of dwarf monitors, including ackies, kimberlys, pilbara, freckles and black heads. I'll give you a call with some phone numbers. Thanks for thinking about us Canuks.
And Frank, what's up with Daytona, you loser?

I don’t know how this comment will relate to your question, maybe it don’t or maybe it will relate to you as a keeper (animal lover)
Few years ago I got a phone call from a herper, he wanted a contact to sell his CBB ackies at a reasonable price, the Canadian market is quit restrictive for high end varanids, thinking I was helping a fellow herp lover, I gave him a contact in Japan and all the tools for trouble free transaction. 2 years later this guy invites me over for diner to thank me, I accepted this invitation with a smile, little did I know.
He showed me the reptile room, rows of Rubbermaid’s from floor to ceiling, ackies kept in little box smaller then 20g aquariums, 100s of ball pythons in shoe box, this was his breeding set up.
You said you kept a pair of ackies in a 6ft tank?
Oh yes at first I did, but now I don’t really care about them anymore, I much prefer making money with them.

Don’t you think they need better conditions, I ask?
Well between you and me, even the big breeder’s keeps them in 20gal with only peat moss, they don’t need more to produce, he said.
Now I am not pointing fingers at anyone, in fact I don’t even want to know more.
I never talk about my tree monitors and will never sell them in Canada in fear this will happen to them.

So when peoples ask me if I know where to get some, I say nop!

Ps, last I herd the guy recycled his menagerie into something more profitable, tomato plants?? I don’t promote these ether.
