Birthing questions

Star_Of_Life Aug 03, 2006 07:34 PM

How long should a clutch take to be born its been about 2 1/2 hours and only three babies that I have seen crawl out. Is 3 babies an ok number for a clutch from a garter thats only the width of my thumb and about 18 inches long?

What kind of garter do you have? Most of them have more than just 3. And usually the mother gives birth to a few dead ones as well. If the mother is done birthing, she should look significantly thinner than she was when she was gravid.

Mine had 22 live babies and 2-3 dead ones. Afterwards she was thin as a pencil(not literally..) but you could definitely tell she was done.

I would just leave her alone in the cage overnight. Maybe have a damp hide in there to encourage birthing.

I have a wandering garter. I'll see if I can dampen up her hide she's in but it may be hard considering she's in there. But all the babies she has shot out have been outside the hide and in plain sight.

wandering garters average about 12-13 babies, less if they are smaller. Just leave her in the cage and don't disturb her, she will pass the others if there are any.
