Melinda

FunkyRes Aug 03, 2006 08:59 PM

This is my new aquisition. I've named her Melinda, from a Grateful Dead song - cumberland blues.

According to the seller, she layed 18 eggs this year, and double clutched two good size clutches last year.

The color of the eyes is from flash - they are really a very pretty blue, almost like she is getting ready to shed (maybe she is - I just got her).

Very docile, she would make an excellent classroom snake.
Next year she will hopefully be the mother of my first kingsnake clutch since I was a teen (my male is WC banded, not albino. He is LTC).

Which of your WC Cals are you gonna breed her to?

Harry - he's the guy I wild collected in 2000 and until 2004 was my only snake.

He's the one I thought was over 5 feet - but recent proper measurement (using a string) showed 4.5 feet.

I don't know the genetics of Melinda, but if she's from banded breeding then all the young should be banded, which is what I'm hoping for. I'm going to hold back the best of the zipper patterning (where the white band only goes to the middle of the back) as I want to try and breed for that trait, hopefully someday producing a banded that is unbroken zipper from head to tail.

Looking at some of the young cal kings produced here, at least in captive lines that have been crossed back and forth, the young don't always follow the patterning of the parents even when both are of the same naturally occuring form - so we'll see what happens.

The seller told me she was prepared for double clutching. I did put her in with my big male, he came out of his hide and licked her numerous times and followed her around the tank for about 2 hours so I thought maybe he would try - but then he lost interest and went back into his hide, so I removed her. I'll try again in a couple days. I'm doubtful they will do anything, since I did not brumate the male (and even if they did, he may not have viable sperm) but other than possible disease transmission, there's no harm in trying as long as I'm there to make sure they don't eat each other.

Oh - I don't have a native species breeders permit.

I'm going to pick one up for next year. I'm still going to try though, breeding them doesn't do any damage to wild stock - she was legally purchased and he was legally collected years ago, so I really don't think fish and game will decide to come after me in the unlikely chance that they do get busy this week and the even unliklier chance that fish and game knows about it.

I will get the permit next year.
