I know that treated lumber can't be used to make a cage, but would it be a problem to use it as shelving for the cages? I have some 4' vision cages, as well as some aquariums I would like to used for display. I was initially going to go with the metal utility type shelves they sell at lowes. I have a lot of treated lumber I didn't use for a pergola and thought that would be even better, as I could customize it. I would probably paint it as well. I wasn't sure if treated off gassed or something.

First what type of treated lumber is it CCA, ACQ, CBA-A, CB-B, SBX?

I doubt its CCA since its production was halted in December of 2003 for consumer use it is now only available fo industrial highway and agricultural applications.

Most likely it is AC2 or ACQ, Alkaline Copper Quaternary, which is safe and doesn't leach harsh chemicals like the arsenic and chromium found in CCA. Which was mass produced for nearly 3 decades and about 90% of all treated wood produced before 2003 contains CCA.

If it was me and I had ACQ or AC2 I would not worry about useing the product within the cage or even as shelving. However I would not use any CCA product as shelving as it can cause cancer, it has created quite a controversy in the EPA.

Is there any way to tell what type it is? I got it either last year or the year before. (pretty sure last year) Is there a stamp or something that will tell me? Thanks for the response.

Nothing I am aware of they may be something stamped on the end grain but I highly doubt it. Other than a chemical test there is no real way to tell. They call them both green board for a reason.

2nd that Boran products make the wood blue.

on the tags on the studs it has AC2, so it is cool. Thanks for the help!
