Sexing corn snakes

necroscollector Aug 04, 2006 08:19 AM

Has anyone had luck using the popping method from Kathy video? I have tried on both of my snakes, no luck.

Question: On her video it shows male, but what does a female snake look like when you try the popping method?

thanks
g

I would say you have females. The way to test popping is with a male so you will get a feel for it. You don't want to squeeze too hard!

Can't you also tell the sex of the snake by the length of the tail? i'm sure that's not as reliable as probing, but from what I've heard males usually have a much longer tail than females.

Ok. When I tried I notice in the vent there were two dark dots inside on both sides of the vent, but nothing ever popped out like the video.

If you look closely at the video she shows a male first and then a female. Try it with your thumb further back towards the end of the tail. How old/large a snake are you doing this on?

roughly a year and around 24".

I doubt a beginner could reliably pop a snake that large. Once they get to be about 18" long or so, the male has a much stronger set of muscles to keep the hemipenes inside them. So, it requires more pressure than is safe to exert to pop a larger snake.

I would take your animal to someone more experienced in sexing them, or post some pictures of the animals from the underside, from the vent to the tip of the tail. We're usually pretty accurate.

i dunno about the amel, but the red looks like a male to me....if it were up to me, i'd say the amel was a female, but its iffy

Image when I bought these from breeder last year, the red was listed as a female and the amel was a male.

This is frustrating. I call around town to some the vets and they want $57 to $75 to probe them to determine the sex.
