URGENT: small plastic cages

herpethologist Aug 04, 2006 09:47 AM

Hi,
Does anyone have any info where I can purchase appoximately 250 small, clear plastic (inexpensive) cages. I'm looking for something similar to Exoterra's small Faunariums (7"x4"x5"(those small standard lizard or fish containers). Except, I would prefer something that does not have a ventilated lid.

I'm a graduate student studying small lizards and need to house many small animals efficiently. I have large racks and hope to fit as many small cages onto one shelf as possible. Currently we are using 5.5 gallon aquarium and can only store 18 aquariums per rack. These are too big.

Any advice or info is greatly appreciated!

It sounds like herp show display cases would do you well. There are quite a few mfgrs. Look in the classifieds section (Cages,Supplies, etc). Here is a place to start.

Doug made me a bunch of small, white HDPS cages with acrylic doors for baby rosies. I simply placed them along a shelf with the back over heat tape. The cages were small, light, inexpensive, escapeproof, waterproof and extremely durable. The tops had screen for UV light access though I didn't use it.

Wouldn't a reptile breeder rack with lots of tubs in it, be just what you need?

Try finding beanie baby boxes. Derek

I have helped a grad student with the same issue.

I also recommend a lidless rack, assuming that prey items won't be able to escape. You can build a rack around small acrylic or polycarbonate boxes or those acrylic "critter cages". That main problem with the latter is that you really need to order all of your cages at once to ensure they are all the same height.

For lighting you can mount strip lights along the back of the rack. Saves a lot of space over overhead lighting.

Maybe check out the selection of plastic storage boxes they sell at Target or Wal-mart. They have all shapes and sizes, clear and opaque. Measure the slots in the rack you mentioned you have and go check to see what those stores have. Selection can vary quite a bit from store to store so if one Target has a poor selection another one may have a lot more .. this goes for Wal-mart also. And I'm sure other places sell these but that would depend on where you live as to which stores are there.

Good luck
