extreme shedding problems

toverstr Aug 04, 2006 10:10 AM

My nabire has been trying to shed for about three weeks. I did the whole tub thing with paper towels and water to cover the bottom but that didnt work. He didnt really crawl around and i believe thats why it didnt work. Any suggestions??

Sometimes you have to shed the snake yourself... retry the tub method again and if the snake does not do it itself then you can VARY CAREFULLY do it will small tweezers...

Good luck

Try again with no perch. If the snake has nothing to cling to, it's going to crawl around. If it doesn't shed in a couple of days, I'd wait til the next shed. It sucks I know, but you don't risk a skin tear. Good luck.

By "trying to shed" do you mean it's gotten part of the shed but not all of it, or it hasn't shed yet and looks like it should? If it's got a partial shed, follow the previous instructions of taking out the perch and put it in a tub with a wet towel and leave it there for 24 hours or so. I actually helped my girl shed by just reaching in and holding her shedding skin while she worked thru it. I also gave it a great deal of spraying while doing that. She was very good about letting me help her and she didn't try to remove my fingers even though it was after dark....very unusual for her (she's quite the shark after lights out). You might want to revisit your husbandry practices to see if there is something you can do to improve the next shed.

I kinda though we were talking about a few stray pieces... Ya, if your dealing with the entire shed, dont try to shed it...

I had this problem with our GTP when we first got her, before we changed to a plastic cage with higher humidity. As others said, try the whole damp paper towel thing - very very moist (1/4 inch or a bit more water in a container with paper towels deep enough that the snake won't drown) - important though, no perch, and though the snake might not like you for it, lightly COVER the snake in moist paper towels. This sort of forces it to crawl around (make sure the paper towels are a bit crumpled so it doesn't ever suffocate the snake). If the snake crawls on top of the paper towels, put another paper towel on top again, and leave the snake there for a few HOURS if it still doesn't come off. When this happened to us, I used an UTH under the plastic 'bath' bin to make sure the water wouldn't get too cold. Made it nice & steamy. 10 minutes probably won't work.
